Advertising and Marketing Communication Practice
Consolidated ICC Code
The Consolidated ICC Code of Advertising and Marketing Communication Practice
The Consolidated ICC Code of Advertising and Marketing Communication Practice is a set of precepts for the new age of communications, produced by some of the best marketing, self-regulatory and legal expertise available from around the world.
ICC’s first Code of Advertising Practice was released in 1937, and has continually been revised and updated by the ICC Marketing and Advertising Commission to adapt to changes in the global environment.
The 9th edition of the Code, launched in September 2011, represents industry’s proactive approach to rapidly-changing developments in marketing technology, tools and techniques to market products and services.
Developed by experts from all sectors of industry and all regions of the world, the Code is a globally applicable self-regulatory framework that harmonizes best practices, which can be locally adapted for cultural and legal differences and which effectively protect consumers when implemented and enforced through local, independent self-regulatory organizations.
The Code sets the ethical standards and guidelines for successful self-regulation of marketing and advertising practices on difficult topics including:
- Online behavioural advertising
- Digital interactive media
- Environmental claims
- Privacy protection
- Marketing to children
Its purpose is to protect consumers by clearly setting out the dos and don’ts for responsible marketing to ensure legal, honest, decent and truthful communications and practices.
The online version of the Code, downloads and translations in a growing number of languages, as well as companion resources, including links to country-specific self-regulatory codes from around the world are accessible from a dedicated website, www.codescentre.com.
